There is no doubt that retailers and other businesses are having a difficult time these days.  Customers are coming in less frequently and spending much less.  A great way to get more cutomers into a store is to execute event marketing targeted towards your customers and potential customers.  Events are a great way to bond with your customers, build goodwill, and most importantly, drive sales for the company.  Retailers offer a new market for event planners who are looking for opportunities.  You can pitch retailers on how events will bring large groups of customers into their store and how the events can be done without spending a ton of money.  The event should have a creative theme that ties in with the stores products, live entertainment or celebrity appearance, interactive stations, knowledgeable sales people, and more.  You of course want to alert the media and advertise your event.  Event marketing is a fun and innovative way to bring in more customers to any retail store and it is much more creative than simply announcing another massive sale.
